I have been doing some of my large drawing again and enjoying it immensely though I find I am completely drained after I have finished them. These large works seem to me like giving birth ....
Rarely do I try and photograph these works as there is just too much detail that you cannot see - and I am only doing this because my daughter asked me to. So, I am beginning with some of the detail of the left hand side of the pair (not sure they qualify as a diptych as they are not joined), and then you will see small images of the two side by side and which show absolutely nothing really. The works are quite large - 70mm x 1100mm each on Arches Vellum using layers and layers of the creamy French Conte crayons. I think I will be making perspex box frames for them but will wait and see. For the Open Days they will be attached by magnets - more tidily that you see here and in our garages which will allow much more light in that I receive in my 'under the house' studio where I tried to photograph these ...
Some details of the right hand side - not sure why that corner is looking yellowish. |
And below are the images in full but you just have to imagine all the detail you cannot see in this size of image. More than ever I now realise why I don't try to show this kind of work on my blog.
left side - with magnets .... |
right side - with yellow corner again! Blame the studio light. |
These drawings are wonderful - I need to make a plan to see them in real life. When are the Open days?
ReplyDeleteHello Carol. I would LOVE you to come up and visit me in the studio. I have been looking around you blog and can't find an email for you - please send it to me and I will forward my email invitation. The Open Days are on Friday 10th and Saturday 11th October .
DeleteWonderful drawings - their is a life force in them almost like waves of electricity.Maybe that is part of why you feel so tired, there is the actual physical effort, the passion and excitement of what you are creating ( so evident ) and of course the wonderful feeling when you are totally engaged and " its working"
ReplyDeleteOh how I wish I could be there to see them and all your other work which you know I admire so much.

I am so delighted to think their energy, or life force is visible at this scale. x Thank you for seeing that.
DeleteThese are beautiful even at blog scale. I wish I could see them 'in the flesh'
ReplyDeleteThanks Jac. I am certain it is true of so much of our work - it all looks way better in the flesh.
Deleteoh my goodness, these drawings have "the muchness" (as the Mad Hatter played by Johnny Depp said to Alice in Tim Burton's film)
ReplyDeleteOh I love that my drawings have 'the muchness' - still smiling after your comment. Thanks Mo.
DeleteDeeply wonderful
ReplyDeleteAs is your comment India. Thank you.
DeleteHello Susan ~ It's true that original work can never be conveyed in all of its wonderful detail via the internet, but still!! These are lovely, and clicking on the images to enlarge allows even more of their loveliness to be distinguished. And you can definitely feel their energy - the "life force" that Pilgrim at Kerjacob referred to... I know it can be discouraging when photos don't do justice to your work, but know that its qualities do come through...and it's always a good feeling to "share" - to put your work into the world - isn't it?
ReplyDeleteHello Lisa and thank you for this encouragement. Sometimes I think it is just not worth posting about the other work I do as it doesn't show up as it is but I am really glad that you have the sense of what I am doing. It is good to share - specially when people drop in and say how much they enjoy the work.
DeleteAn amazing range and richness of tones, along with those beautifully delicate details... wonderful! Thank you for sharing these...
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by Sharmon - and now that people have confirmed that they are able to 'see' the work, I won't be as reluctant to show more.
DeleteAmazing atmospheric drawings Susan, If I wasn't going to Vietnam ina week or so I'd make the effort to catch up for your open day just to see these drawings in the flesh. They are inspirational!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for that encouraging praise Jack. Sorry you won't be able to come up for the Open days but next year I will be exhibiting for six weeks straight at a Gallery and hope that you find time then to drive up for a peek.
DeleteThese are amazing drawings... and you captured the details very well... as well as the large scale of the whole drawings... beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAmazing work Susan! The details are captivating, and the wholes are spectacular! - would love to see them in person, but since that is not possible thank you so much for sharing them here. I will be back to look again.
ReplyDeletethanks Kim - these drawings are inspired by our trip to your part of the world - glaciers and ice markings. Was absolutely gobsmacked by all the marks I saw from the helicopter.
