inbetween dreams .....

I have been quiet on my blog but busy in the studio.  Never as busy as one would want, but I have found many times to head down here and explore some work.

These images are worked over engravings with ink and other media.  The painterly effect rather than the graphic is what I am aiming to achieve.  I have been working in a similar vein for a while but have made larger works now, and hope to get even larger soon - up to 60cms x 30cms  or thereabouts.  I usually work quite large with my drawings/etchings but this square size of 300cm square is a far more reasonable size to frame and house I think.  I will produce a whole body of this work - trying to simplify the design, not so many fragments though this is fairly typical of the way I work at times.  Fragments emerging from the gloom.

Don't for a moment think I am in a dark place - life is grand and I am blessed.  I am somehow drawn to these deep dark secret places.

I must post on one of my earlier etchings 'Deep Secrets Revealed'.  Probably one of my favourite etchings though because of its emotional context, hardly ever shown.  How often do artists do this I wonder?

  1. So pleased to see a post from you.
I love the print too - funny how some things you produce just touch you - sometimes like that its difficult to part with them.

    1. Thanks Diane. Glad you liked the new work. I will be doing it commercially and setting up a shop on my blog or website at some stage. All takes so much time! The etching I don't sell or show I have given away for very special friends - will put up an image of that soon on my blog. Sometimes it is hard to part with work - occasionally I have sold a piece that I really wish I had kept. We should listen to our gut, and keep the work we want. x

  2. They are looking wonderful - intriguing, detailed, eyes flitting here and there, warm and interesting! Even better in the flesh I expect - so hard to photograph these colours.

    1. Thanks Fiona. I am happy with them though I will be brining to show you and Barry tomorrow to see if you think they stand up 'in the flesh'! I do think they are better than in the photographs - as you mentioned, it is really hard to photograph this work - especially with the graphite ....

  3. These are so quiet and contemplative - and I love etchings and engravings - and the almost monochrome. We have a small collection of etchings, both modern and Scottish etchings dating from the turn of the 20th century. I will blog about the latter some day.

    1. Like you Charlton - I am drawn to the etched or engraved image. And drawings actually - far more than to paintings - unless they are very abstract and fairly monochromatic. Some people read that as incredibly boring but those are the colours that strike a chord with me. I will look forward to seeing that post on your etchings.

  4. They look somehow different from your previous works -or is it just me? These are deeper, explorative, questions rather than answers. I love the painterly feel of them.

    1. These are deeper Ersi - I think because they are much larger images and I am using a few different techniques, I am able to make them a little more interesting. I love that you said 'questions rather than answers'. I think that is why I will call this body of work 'inbetween dreams'. There really are no answers in this work ..... just enquiry and exploration. x

  5. Sensational. There is so much depth and so many markings to explore in this piece. I could look at it for hours.

  6. Thanks for your praise Seth. It gave me a big lift - some work is like that isn't it. If you read Ersi's comment you will see she said these works are like 'questions, not answers' and I think she is right. You can look and look and read into them what you may ....
