I had fun with this book - my fifth for the year. It is a very simple concertina book where I have sewn into the valleys on both sides. What makes it special for me is that I am using the letraset which my father had used when he practised architecture. Long before the time of computers. Many pages in the bundle I have are stuck together, many of the letters have been used and only their rubout marks are left on the papers - all this making it 'hard to read'.
Here you can see more easily how I have sewn into the valleys. I particularly like the few pages I found with the large block script though not much of it was in the bundle. It adds weight to the design of the book I think.
Where I joined papers to give myself a longer concertina, I have used some of the letraset as a spine.
Sometimes I think the simplest books can be the most interesting. I am not making a cover for this though I will make a perspex slip case for it at some stage.
gosh Susan, you've looked after your father's old Letraset, I found some in a folder from the art school days back in the early 70's last month & it shattered when I touched it!
ReplyDeleteNo- it wasn't me who looked after it Mo. And I doubt that my father did either - I just took the bundle of it after he died and brought it home with me, along with architectural film and tracing paper etc. I am not sure how many years ago he used to use it but it feels very waxy so not sure if the base material changed over the years. A shame you couldn't play with yours.
DeleteLove, love, love this! I hope to be able to see it one day too. There are lots of lovely small stories emerging in these works - what a delight for us; and I hope for you.
ReplyDeleteActually this particular book has fed my imagination .... I can see me using overlays of wording like this above artwork. Hmmm ... play is such an important thing to do and learn from.
DeleteI can see you are on a roll with these weekly books Susan. Number 5 looks so intriguing and the use of that letraset is inspired. You are making me very envious with your productivity! Send some of that energy my way please!!
ReplyDeleteHello Lesley. I am on a roll ..... a little stressed by it all but not too much just yet. I am not too precious about any of the books, jsut as long as the ideas keep flowing I am happy and the project is achieving what it is meant to - get me back into the studio and creating. I will certainly try and send some of the energy your way :-)
DeleteSB - such commitment to uniqueness. Each of the books have looked great.B
ReplyDeleteThanks Barry. I am certainly keen to try all sorts of ideas and from that, sift out the ones that I wish to follow through.
DeleteSo good to have you back - I have only just refound you but what a pleasure it has been, arriving to find five books already completed and each one a delicate delight. I’ve always so enjoyed the gentleness and subtly of your work. I look forward to the rest of the 52. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteHello Margaret and thank you so much for re visitin my blog and saying such lovely things. I look forward to heading your way and seeing what you have been up to as well.
DeleteGreat stuff Susan!A book a week is pretty productive. I try for a book a month and am flat out.My letraset is also old and brittle and the letters craze when I transfer them which is quite good on the larger fonts.I have them in a file and use them as the need arises but they are almost done. Good to see you online again.
ReplyDeleteI am finding a book a week quite adventurous for sure ...... but am determined to keep it up. I am quite happy just to make a book with no content. Haven’t needed to as yet but am sure that will happen! Letha set is a wonderful thing indeed .... I am looking forward to having more of a play.
