frivol finished .....

As I said in my previous post, this little collaborative piece was really about having fun, playing .... having a frivol.  I was unable to show you our shared pieces and how they sit together so well as I had not completed the black and white design on the back of my last eight pieces before swapping them with Fiona.

Here they are - sixteen squares in all - decorated front and back.   Eight done by Fiona and eight by me.  As yet we haven't really resolved the way we present this little book - our current thinking is to leave them as unbound books in a box.  That way, we get to arrange and rearrange the story - the visual poetry - in numerous ways.  It is actually fun sitting there and swapping all the pieces around .... quite contemplative.

I am returning to health .... more slowly than I would wish but am definitely improving.  Thank you all for your well wishes.

  1. This is fascinating - and what a great idea to keep the individual pages in a box so they can be rearranged. I felt a need for that during my recent sketchbook project but didn't quite have the courage!

How did you reinforce the pages? It looks like the thickness of foam core board ...

    1. Sorry it has taken me this long to reply Charlton ... so pleased you have followed and enjoyed this collaboration. Yes - an unbound book is a marvellous thing. One of my favourite forms of bookmaking as I love the opportunity of telling and retelling a story. It would have been a marvellous way to work you recent sketchbook project. No doubt though you will apply the idea in the next little while.
The Paper Fiona and I used for this project is a Manyani paper - a little over 600gsm. Very thick and stiff but lovely to work on. Perfect for this kind of project.

    2. Thank you very much for your long reply. I will investigate the Manyani paper - it's new to me but sounds lovely to work with.

  2. Hi Susan - I saw that first image and thought you had stitched! Laugh. There is so much more drama in your shots with the dark background, they look great. It was an interesting exploration wasn't it?

    1. No - no binding here! I do love the fact that we both had almost identical books and yet photographed them in such a way that they look quite different. Mine are dramatic but I do think your photos allow the subtle details of our work to be more apparent and interesting. Love the way you showed so many options of display. Actually love this little project x

    1. Thanks Valerie - I think we both enjoyed this little project more than we thought we would. As you say, plenty of possibilities in design and pattern. I think Fiona's photos shoed those possibilities more clearly.

  4. These are intriguing. I am drawn in by the marks, the small things that require attention. I think your collaborations are unique and well done. The complementary color palette provides a kinship between pieces. Well done!

  6. After reading back to your first entry after the trip I decided to comment here. I am sorry you were burdened with ill health for such a long time, it's great to know that you are now feeling better. And this book is a joy for the eyes. Your books -and Fiona's- always are but the b&w effect here is like a tap dance. (I wonder if this makes sense...) Keep well, Susan! XX
